Training FAQs

Q1: What is Social Media and New Media. How are they connected ?!

A1: Social media is online content created by people using highly accessible and scalable publishing technologies. Social media is a shift in how people discover, read and share news, information and content; it’s a fusion of sociology and technology, transforming monologues (one to many) into dialogues (many to many) and is the democratization of information, transforming people from content readers into publishers. Social media has become extremely popular because it allows people to connect in the online world to form relationships for personal, political and business use. Businesses also refer to social media as user-generated content (UGC) or consumer-generated media (CGM).

New media is a term meant to encompass the emergence of digital, computerized, or networked information and communication technologies. Consider printed newspapers and magazines as ‘old media’. Its new media alternative is a downloadable e-Book or media that encourages interactivity. A Podcast, content that encourages the attention economy can be considered as one of the products of new media.

In many ways they are interdependent. The advent of Web 2.0 (second generation, greater collaborative technologies) has meant that people want to share their content and content is now more portable with podcasts, faster networks and mobile devices.

Q2: Why do I need to be trained to use Social and New media when I can learn about it by playing on the web and looking at examples?
