In terms of basics your video should have:

A Beginning Middle and End – i.e: Structure & the meaning behind the message

Good scripting and an underlining appreciation of themes
- that complement the purpose of the video in the first place

Respect for copyright – associated with all types of content that will be incorporated

An inclusion of something to attract the viewer in the first 5-7sec
- You get only one fast shot to make an impression!
- The perceived value on first watch – The bounce factor! How long will people wait for it?
- Verification of outcome – How are you going to translate the outcome or benefit of this
- product for your customer

The emotional need of the customer – Or, even assumed generic state!

Timing – Is everything

Positioning – Using an appropriate location

Language – For example, tone & accessibility in a global situation.

These are just a few things to think about before you have to consider before making the video even if it as short as only 30 seconds long.
NB Traditional television commericals have lots of experience, for example, they can make advertising subtle or subliminal in nature. There appears to be a science. Many believe that it is linked to the study of consumer behaviour.

So far we’ve been talking about formulation.
Another aspect of Video production, especially for the web is to consider an appropriate type.

Consider that there are 7 Types of Video content

Procedural – eInduction and compliance

Interactive – Video Tile – Face-to-face presenter

Talking Heads – CEOs, Managers (Internal) or Client Testimonials (external)

Scenario based – Very informative for clients

Animation – Product Demonstrations or key concepts (similar to Procedural but marketing orientated)

Simulations & Test based – e.g: For e-Learning Hotspot / Interaction

Web-based advertisements – e.g: banners – NB If FLASH based, currently (March 2010) the Apple i-pad will be unable to view this.

Finally, positioning / movement and keeping the viewer engaged. Jigging is a term used to explain this.
Is it really necessary for constant movement of images, scenes or the person communicating!!
NB For talking heads framing is very important, together with considering if the final output once rendered will result in the entire video getting shrunk!

The answer is that it is all about appropriateness.
For long interviews it does help to pan, focus on for example the persons hands or even get closer!
For a 30 second web advert it depends on what is being communicated, from both a product or specific message. Videotile produce some great content, where the speakers statements are re-enforced with statements, images or an moving illustration/animation.
It really is about the meaning behind the message.

Video Screencasting is a great way to communicate your post conference knowledge.
The picture shows a typical view of what can be made available to delegates after an event.

For example, your company may hold a quarterly meeting. It could be a sales (dealer update) event or your Consultancy practice meets on a regular basis to share best practice.

Often many of these events are sponsored by external firms with guest speakers delivering new expertise or insights. Although these events can be streamed live, it is difficult to structure a meaningful package for later viewing. What we mean by this is, for example:

You stream the event

The event is recorded

Presentation materials such as powerpoint or video is included as part of the presentation

A Question and Answer session is included

The session has a number of breaks and could last for half a day.

The Problem:

A summary of the event is needed

Q & A’s need to be summarised

Some elements of the event are not required, for example: Change-over of speakers or random discussions

It would be great to download and watch the event later to refresh attendee knowledge together with keeping a professionally available version of the event.

There is a need to ensure the next event is a progression or can reference what took place

Non-attendees would be sad if they missed it. Or, if due to busy schedules delegates could not attend, the video screencast represents a willingness to ensure that all employees are included and key aspects of knowledge is communicated.

Specific knowledge highlights / points can be emphasised.

This is where a Screencast can help.

A four hour presentation can be summarised and presented for both later streaming or downloading to your ipod.

The following files can be provided for download mp3, movie (mp4/mov), ppt and related documents

Both a video of the presenter and his/her associated slides can be synchronised and shown.

A time-line slider and bookmarker cross-referenced to the associated video and slide is made available.

Typically, a four hour event can take 2 days to turn into a professional 1 hour screencast available within days of the event.

The course “e-Learning Best Practice with OLM” took place on 15th December 2009 at Oracle Corporations London offices. The course was heavily subscribed and included understanding the implementation of SCORM 1.2 compliant e-learning content and best practice in the areas of project management, metadata tracking and content repurposing / remediation. Please click here for the full course coverage.

Oracle Learning Management (OLM) is a unified learning delivery system that allows organisations to extend training to employees, customers, and partners. OLM offers a wide range of functionality, from on-line classroom management to self-service learner joining options / enrolment. The following link takes you to a video that shows you OLM in action. However, this seminar focused on developing e-Learning content NOT administration features of OLM.

OLM supports SCORM 1.2 and hopefully future releases will support greater SCORM functionality. OLM is tightly integrated with the Oracle Human Resources applications, leveraging existing organisation structures, management hierarchies and employee data.

Working closely with Oracle we identified the need to offer a forum of sharing in practical skills, challenges and approaches for implementing effective e-Learning solutions, for example: re-mediation, re-purposing and selecting meta-data models are just as important as developing content itself. In addition, learning paths and selecting the most appropriate tracking data from learners should all be part of the initial learning design.

The seminar was presented by Dr Savi S Arora and Jon Turner and leading experts in the field of implementing practical e-Learning solutions.

Dr Savi Arora has been prolific documenter regarding standards for implementing Learning Management Systems, getting content to work, for example and passing tracking data. Dr Savi is the UK Managing Director of Knowledge Hemispheres – an leading e-Learning and New Media production and e-Learning integration company. Also presenting at the conference was Jon Turner, a thought leader and practitioner in the area of e-Learning standards, implementation methodologies and strategy.

Mr Jon Turner is Managing Director of one of Europe’s leading e-Learning companies: Quistor.

After the event all the attendees were given access to streaming video, audio and materials presented on the day.

Many large organisations consist of multiple sites divided into a regional structure. One of the divisions inside the NHS has a number of challenges. Firstly, to bring people together for updates, and secondly, to save paper distributing related information, for example, presentation materials or supplemental working papers.

Using our Screencast service we recorded a number of their conferences for attendees, home-based workers and absent staff. Within two days of the conference all associated content was formatted and available online. Our screencast page includes options to either view online or download the associated Powerpoint presentation pack, speaker video, adobe pdf documents and audio file (.mp3). Formats for viewing on content on mobile phone based on a download option were also provided.

In terms of advantages for the client, the solution delivered content that respected both the present economy we live in and saving the planet in terms of travel. In addition, information was archived and released as a series of podcasts and blogs.

Q: It is great that you produce videos. We could do the same at our home or office. What is different about your service?
A: Yes, you are correct, you too could do a lot of the video production process yourself. Increasingly exciting new products and software is available.

The difference with us is that we know that in order to deliver an even more professional finish you have to consider the following: Techniques to engage the viewer, message construction and scripting, use of consist images together with advice on brand impact, rapid editing techniques with professional level tools and using high quality equipment. Combine the latter with our skills with social media and multiple formats for online access, for example, podcasting, dedicated website hosting, effective streaming techniques and website integration, we are confident that your viewers / potential clients will be impressed and you will save time too and cost too. We believe our rates are competitive with the bonus of giving advice on route to your final version.

Q: What is your project process for developing Videos online?
A: Good question as preparation is key before pressing/hitting the record button. Our project process for video production incorporates logistical and directional planning. We explore the message behind the movie and work with our clients to recommend the best impact, typically invoking content piloting and previews.

From an online perspective, in the attention economy website visitors will ‘bounce off’ sites within seconds unless the video production is inclusive and inspiring.

Q: Is there a ratio you use for recording time to reaching the end product?
A: What you are referring to really is about how dynamic and flexible are we from the time of recording to reaching the final version. Many companies suggest a 1:5 ration, i.e: for every hour of recorded footage it will take approximately 5 times the recording time for editing.

However, for very short video promos, for example 1 minute, this does not imply simply 5minutes of editing! Editing is just one element of the production process. Effective editing can consist of many video clips transitioned with suitable titles and appropriate animation.

The project must be considered from the context of understanding practical / logistical boundaries and procedural elements, for example use of location and consent.

Q: What is different about online video production.
A: Common elements for both on-line and off-line video production are planning, editing, previewing, refining and finalizing.

Specifically for online production we have to consider areas such as web positioning, play-ability (appropriate size for playback device), output format and bandwidth usage (especially if the video will be offered as a downloadable items, also known as a Video asset). Together we plan these items to assure an effective video is produced. We also recommend ways in which the video asset can be re-used and replenished to keep the message fresh, for example, adapting as a brand change.

We used their video footage to establish two field reports/updates. This content was then made available on their website and is also viewable in full from YouTube.

The content was developed for re-use, for example, capturing screen-shots, distribution to UK schools as a Video to promote greater awareness of the cause.

Future plans are to twin UK schools with these schools and to use Webcams – hopefully inspiring our future generations to eradicate poverty.

BAL RASHMI means the morning sun emerging above the horizon like the sparking eyes of a new born, radiating hope and cheer. Bal Rashmi was founded on Children’s Day the 14th November 1972 at Jaipur, Rajasthan, (India) with the motto of “Save Children Save Generation”.

When a leading London Art centre, Watermans needed to promote their monthly schedule of films, plays and art exhibitions, they choose khlinteractive to structure a 15 minute promotional video. The script consisted of a structured walk through of facilities and the contribution to the community provided by the centre. The remainder of the online and in-premise video consists of a guide showing excerpts of each presentation.

In terms of advantages for the client, the solution delivered content that was reusable from a placement perspective, for example, shown on all inhouse plasma screens and available to online viewers. In addition, ticket sales increased as a result of visitors being presented with tasters.

And will I be charged the same, or will the price be reduced.

A: The rate card does offer a pure editing service which is less than an inclusive package. The rate is charged on an hourly basis. NB We cannot guarantee the quality of your recording but will try our best to reduce any inherited sound.

Q2: How will the finished audio product be delivered to me on completion? Is it possible for the final product to be converted onto a CD.

A: A number of formats are available. Typically .wav and .mp3 are provided. In the case of the latter, we also apply ID3 tags to ensure that Meta data (information about data) will be both resident in the file structure and for copyright information purposes.

CD releases in CD-R or .MP3 format can be provided. We will keep all masters for additional back-up and archiving purposes.

Q3: If the audio content is provided by my company, can audio voice-over be translated into different languages.

A: Yes, we offer both a transcription service and translation service, for example: Hindi, Urdu, English, Portuguese, French and many other languages – regional accents are respected and therefore, we showcase a number of options before you finalise.

Q4: I would like an audio message to be posted on my webpage. Do you provide the audio plug-ins as well for the audio to be uploaded on the site.

A: We work with Open source web solutions but also have a dedicated web team. Therefore, we can advise and source plug-ins for playing, for example an audio segment. For example, Joomla and WordPress are two open source content management engines for web and blogging sites, respectively. We have delivered a number of projects where seamless playing of client generated content has been integrated using reliable (secure) and supportable plug-ins.

Q5: Are there a special types of equipment your technician uses for recording and editing. Would I need to provide any minor equipment for quality recording.

A: You can select an in-studio service (you come to us) or a remote option (equipment with or without a recording technician). If we visit you for a recording we will typically bring along our portable studio with powered microphones.
